In the not so distant past, most off-road vehicles had uncomfortable seats, hard suspension, questionable handling and no creature comforts. These days that couldn’t be further from the truth. All the vehicles in our fleet have all the features of the average suburban. The choice of which vehicle to choose is not contingent on the amount of cabin space, engine and towing capacity you’ll want for your off-road adventure.
Two of our most popular vehicles for a family or group holiday experience are the LandCruiser Prado GXL and the LandCruiser 200 GXL Wagon. For a larger group, we have the eight-seater 70 series LandCruiser Troop Carrier. For a quick summary of our 6-8 person vehicles, scroll down to our table summary of family-friendly 4WD hire vehicles. For an in-depth comparison please continue reading.
The LandCruiser has proven off-road reliability for more than 50 years. It is frequently the vehicle of choice for tackling off-road treks. The Prado is the most compact of all the vehicles in our fleet that offer more than five seats- it offers seating for seven with reasonable access for third row passengers. In common with the 200 series Toyota, when you have the third row of seats fully occupied there is little room for luggage and camping equipment, but you are able to configure the third row to have one seat up and the other down if you only need six seats.
The third row is most suitable for children aged 7 to 14. The Prado’s five-speed auto transmission and constant 4×4 with limited-slip torsen centre differential takes you seamlessly from on-road to off-road and the low range system is a simple process to engage for low speed. There is also centre locking differential to take you across the toughest terrain.
Though compact, the Prado offers many noteworthy features:
• Push button ignition and 4WD selection
• Automatic transmission
• Reversing camera
• Seven SRS air bags
• Vehicle stability control
• Active traction control
• Auxiliary fuel tank
• Anti-roll suspension
• Cruise Control
• Air Conditioning control front and rear
• Up to 2.5 tonne braked towing capacity
Roof racks and a cargo carrier can be fitted at an additional charge if you need to access all seven seats and carry luggage. Be aware that hire vehicles fitted with roof racks are not allowed on K’gari (Fraser Island). If you need more luggage room that a roof rack provides, perhaps you should consider hiring one of our larger vehicles.
The 200 Series GXL offers a roomier cabin with excellent seating capacity, particularly in the second row rear seats. There is also a third row of seats that can be accessed if you don’t need the luggage room; adults will need a bit of agility to access this area, but the kids will enjoy the novelty of travelling in the back.
There is more room in the third row of this vehicle than Prado, giving the 200 Series an extra seat. The 200 Series also has more luggage space. You are able to configure the third row seating to have half up and half down allowing for even more luggage space if you only need six seats.
The way this LandCruiser is built, means it drives like a large limousine with a quiet and comfortable ride that lives up to the ‘cruiser’ part of its name out on the highway.
There is plenty of power from the six-speed gearbox, and all the FleetCrew 200 series LandCruiser GXL’s have Old Man Emu suspension upgrades that give an extra two inch lift to ensure your comfort and ease of handling when driving across rough terrain.
With the 200 series LandCruiser you get:
For a larger group, you can have the pleasure of having the LandCruiser Troop Carrier (fondly known as the ‘Troopy’) at your disposal. Since they were first introduced into Australia in the 1970s, these workhorses have been the vehicle of choice when a large passenger-carrying capacity 4WD is needed. The iconic side-facing rear seating is no longer available due to safety issues, but this is a small price to pay for the sheer pleasure of driving this classic Toyota. Even with all the seats occupied, there is still ample room for luggage and a small amount of camping gear, making the Troopy a favourite for a larger group.
The third row of seating in this 4WD is the most comfortable of the three vehicles for adults. Although, this is offset by the fact that the front row has a three person bench-seat, so it’s best to have the smallest adult in the middle if you require all eight seats. Having the highest wheel base clearance of all the Toyota 4WDs, the Troopy is the vehicle of choice if you are looking to tackle serious off-roading. Be aware that this 4WD is available with a manual transmission and manual engagement of the 4WD transmission. The LandCruiser Troop Carrier is recommended for experienced 4WD manual licenced drivers only.

When deciding which 4WD vehicle is best for your group, consider the amount of luggage and equipment you will be carrying. It’s important not to overload any vehicle, and this is vitally important when driving off-road to avoid getting stuck in sand or mud.
For a larger group with lots of luggage and equipment the best option may be to hire two vehicles. All the 4WD’s in FleetCrew’s fleet are fitted with UHF radios, which are fun and add an element of adventure when traveling as a convoy on an off-road holiday.
