Camping is one of our favourite things to do. We love to recharge in the outdoors, reconnect with nature and explore beautiful Queensland with our friends and family. Whether you’re heading off for a short weekend camping trip or a week-long adventure, we’ve got a list of the essential camping items you need to pack. Here goes the camping checklist:
Although it’s possible to sleep under the stars, with nothing more than a sleeping mat, chances are you’ll need a bit more than that to enjoy your camping experience. You don’t have to pack a 5-star glamping tent, with all the glamorous extras, to be comfortable (What, leave the queen innerspring at home?)
You will need a tent, preferably one that doesn’t leak water. Before you hit your local discount store to find a $30 tent, stop and think about it. Chances are that it’s not going to hold up for your trip.
Thankfully, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a great tent. If you don’t want a high end hiking tent, there are a few cheaper options like the Coleman Instant Up tent. These tents are super easy for a family to assemble.
The perfect tent will depend on your needs. Ask yourself whether you need a lightweight hiking tent, full sized family tent or a four season one?
In addition to a tent, don’t forget to take a hammer, pegs (best to pack some spares), poles, ropes, flooring, dustpan and brush. We recommend that you put a tarp over your tent to protect it from direct sunlight.
Don’t skimp on this one! You can sleep on a yoga mat or piece of foam, but you won’t be doing your back any favours. Save yourself a trip to the chiro and invest in a good hiking mat. With the Exped MegaMat, you’ll have such a great night sleep that you won’t want to come home (it’s seriously that good!)
We’re blessed with fantastic weather in South East Queensland. Unless, you’re holidaying in Toowoomba during winter – with bitterly cold westerly winds – you don’t need a four season sleeping bag. Get a sleeping bag that is suitable for SEQ weather. A feather down sleeping bag will be too balmy for a hot summer night.
You can skimp on a full sized pillow. Compact camping pillows are available, or you can roll up a jacket to make one.
If you have a full Esky, what else do you need? In all seriousness, a few more things. Grab yourself a few camping chairs and foldup table.
You may also need a fuel or gas stove. If you are planning to rely on open fires, then pack untreated firewood as you can’t collect it in Queensland National parks. Also remember to check current local fire bans and restrictions before lighting a flame.
Don’t forget:
Here’s a list of the things you’ll need for your camping kitchen:
You will need to pack your clothes depending on the weather forecast. Check it so you know what to wear to go camping. Pack extra layers and a raincoat e.g. for those cold and rainy days.
Don’t forget the loo paper. There’s nothing worse than having to use leaves instead (say no more!) You’ll also need:
You’ve got the power! Take an extension cord, extra batteries and chargers for your electronics, jumper leads and inverter.
Pack these items as well when you set off for four wheel driving & camping.
